THE TOOL OF RENEWAL: HOW TO CHANGE THE "CHANNEL"?

By: Pastor Flávio Macieira - 2025

Day 3 of the "Focused Mind, Peaceful Heart" series.

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:2 (NLT)

Are your thoughts being shaped by the world or transformed by God?

Over the last two days, we've made a diagnosis (our mind is a spring) and found the right focus (the Philippians 4:8 list). Now, we arrive at the most practical question of all: how do we actually do this? In the midst of a noisy and demanding world, how do we manage to change our thinking patterns? Paul's answer is one of the most powerful tools in the Christian life: the renewal of the mind.

The apostle begins with a warning: "Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world" (or "Do not be conformed"). The image here is of being squeezed into a mold, forced to take the shape of something else. Every day, the "pattern of this world"—its ideas about success, value, happiness, and fear—tries to press us into its mold. It tells us that our peace depends on our circumstances, our performance, and the approval of others. If we aren't intentional, we slowly and unknowingly begin to think like the world.

God's alternative isn't just a minor adjustment; it's a "transformation." The Greek word here is metamorphoo, from which we get our word metamorphosis. It’s the same word used to describe Jesus in His glorious state on the Mount of Transfiguration. It is a radical, inside-out change, like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. And what is the engine of this metamorphosis? "By changing the way you think" (the renewing of your mind).

Renewing your mind isn't a mystical process. It's the daily, deliberate act of removing the world's "software" and installing God's "software." We do this by saturating our thoughts with the truth of His Word. When a thought of anxiety about the future pops up ("What if I fail?"), we counter it with a renewed, truthful thought ("God promises to never leave me nor forsake me"). When the world's mold says, "you need more to be happy," we renew our minds with the truth that contentment is found in Christ. It's a conscious exchange, one thought at a time.

The transformation you seek is on the other side of the renewal you practice.
