THE PURPOSE IN THE PRESSURE

Day 2 of the "The Anchor of Hope: Navigating Uncertain Times with an Eternal Certainty" series.

Imagine a blacksmith working on a piece of raw metal. He doesn't leave it on a soft shelf. He subjects it to the consuming fire, heating it until it's malleable. Then, he places it on the anvil and strikes it repeatedly with a heavy hammer. The metal is bent, shaped, and plunged into cold water—a process of pressure and transformation that, to the metal, must feel chaotic and destructive. But the blacksmith is not trying to destroy the metal; he is transforming it into a strong, useful, and beautiful sword. Our hope in Christ does not exempt us from the fire and the hammer of suffering, but it assures us that the Divine Blacksmith has a glorious purpose for every blow.
In yesterday's devotional, we anchored our hope on the rock of the resurrection. Today, we face the inevitable question: if our hope is so secure, why does life still hurt so much? Why does God allow the storms? The Apostle Paul, who knew suffering intimately, gives us one of the most profound and life-changing answers in the entire Bible.
We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. Romans 5:3-5 (NLT)
This passage is radically counter-cultural. The world teaches us to avoid trouble at all costs. Paul tells us to "rejoice" in it. Why? Because he understands the Blacksmith's process. He knows that the pressure is not pointless. He gives us a divine production chain: Problems and trials produce endurance (the ability to keep going when everything says to quit). Endurance produces strength of character (a tested, approved character, refined by fire). And character produces hope.
Notice that hope here is not the starting point, but the end result. This is a different hope from Day 1. The hope of the resurrection is our objective anchor. The hope of Romans 5 is our subjective, experiential anchor. It is the hope that is born not in spite of suffering, but because of it. It is the tested and proven confidence that if God sustained us through the last storm, He will sustain us through the next. It is the assurance that the Blacksmith knows what He is doing. And, in the end, this hope "will not lead to disappointment," because it is validated by the love of God poured into us by the Holy Spirit.
Your Next Step of Faith: Today's step of faith is an exercise in reinterpreting suffering. Think of a trial or difficulty you are currently facing (or have recently faced). In your journal, instead of focusing only on the pain, try to identify God's "production chain." Write: "In this trial of [describe the situation], I ask God to produce in me: 1. Endurance to not give up. 2. Strength of character that glorifies Him. 3. A stronger, tested hope."
The Soul Mirror:
Is your natural reaction to suffering to ask "Why me?" or "What does God want to teach me?"
Looking back, can you identify how a past difficulty produced in you a stronger character or a deeper hope?
How can the assurance of God's love (Romans 5:5) give you courage to face the pressure you are in today?
Let's trust the Blacksmith's process in prayer.
Divine Blacksmith, I confess that I hate the fire and the hammer. I run from pressure and complain about the pain. Forgive me for doubting Your purpose in my trials. Today, I choose to trust Your process. Take the raw metal of my life and shape me. In the midst of this difficulty, produce in me endurance, strength of character, and, above all, an unshakable hope that will not lead to disappointment, for it is secured in Your great love for me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Suffering is not a sign of God's absence, but an instrument in His master hands.
