Day 5 of the "The Naked Soul: Finding God in the Radical Honesty of the Psalms" series.

Have you ever seen what happens when a young child hears their favorite song? There's no hesitation. Their shoulders start to move, a huge smile breaks across their face, and soon they are jumping and dancing around the room, given over to pure, unfiltered joy. They don't worry if they're dancing "correctly," if anyone is watching, or if the moment is appropriate. The joy simply overflows spontaneously and contagiously. As we get older, we adults learn to contain that joy. We become spectators, analyzing our emotions rather than simply expressing them.
After a week of diving into difficult emotions like anxiety, loneliness, and guilt, the Bible doesn't leave us in that place. It invites us to rediscover this childlike, unreserved joy. Psalm 100 is God's invitation to the party. It's heaven's favorite song playing, calling us to the dance floor of worship.
Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth! Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy... Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation. Psalm 100:1-2, 4-5 (NLT)
This series is called "The Naked Soul" because it gave us permission to be honest about our pain. But radical honesty also means being honest about our joy. The joy described in Psalm 100 is not a superficial feeling based on perfect circumstances. Notice that the reason to celebrate is not "because my life is great," but "because the Lord is good." Our joy is not anchored in what happens to us, but in Who we belong to.
The psalmist gives us the reasons for the party: We belong to Him ("we are his people"), He is good, His love is eternal, and His faithfulness never fails. These are unshakable truths. They are true on sunny days and on stormy days. Therefore, joy is not so much an emotion we feel, but a discipline we practice. It is the act of faith to "enter his gates with thanksgiving" even when our hearts feel heavy. It's choosing to "worship the Lord with gladness" as an act of war against discouragement. It's celebrating God's goodness until our hearts remember what our faith already knows.
Your Next Step of Faith:
Today's step of faith is to take a "Joy Break." Set aside five minutes. Put on a worship song that always lifts your spirit. Close your eyes. For these five minutes, your only task is to meditate on the truths of verse 5: "The Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever. His faithfulness continues." Don't ask for anything. Just give thanks. If you feel like it, sing along, raise your hands, or simply smile. Let the joy overflow without a filter.
The Soul Mirror:
In your life of worship, do you feel more like a restrained spectator or a freely dancing child? What holds you back from being more expressive?
Which of the truths about God in Psalm 100 ("He is good," "His love is eternal," etc.) do you most need to remember today?
What has been the biggest "joy thief" in your life this week? How can deliberate celebration fight back against it?
Let's celebrate our God in prayer.
Lord, You are good, and Your love endures forever! Forgive me for the times I approach You with a heavy and restrained heart, having forgotten the countless reasons I have to celebrate. Today, I choose joy. I enter Your presence with singing, with thanksgiving, and with praise. Thank you for creating me, for calling me Your own, and for Your faithfulness that never fails. May my life be a contagious celebration of Your goodness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Joy is not the absence of sorrow, but the celebrated presence of God.
