A reflection from the series "Blessings for the Way."
“He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:29-31 (NLT)

The secret to flying higher is not to flap your wings harder, but to learn to wait for the right wind.
We are living in an epidemic of burnout. Culture glorifies the relentless hustle, and exhaustion has become a badge of honor. We treat ourselves like machines, pushing beyond our limits, and then we are surprised when the inevitable happens: exhaustion. Isaiah reminds us of a universal truth: even the strongest and most vigorous—"youths"—get tired and stumble. Human strength has an end.
It is at this point of exhaustion that God offers us a counter-intuitive blessing. The promise of renewed strength is not for those who "try harder," but for "those who trust in the LORD." Trusting (or waiting), in our hyperactive culture, sounds like passivity, a waste of time. But in the original Hebrew, the word for "wait/trust" (qavah) is active and rich. It means to bind together, to tie oneself to something, to wait with expectation and confidence.
Think of the eagle. It is the ultimate symbol of strength and majesty in the heavens, not because it flaps its wings more frantically than other birds, but because it is a master of soaring. The eagle discerns the thermal currents—invisible columns of rising warm air—and instead of fighting against the wind, it spreads its wings and allows itself to be lifted by a power far greater than its own.
Our self-effort is the frantic flapping. To "trust in the Lord" is the discipline of discerning the "currents of the Spirit." It is to stop striving, to open the wings of faith in prayer and dependence, and to allow God's power to lift us above our weariness. It is to exchange our exhaustion for His inexhaustible strength.
Don't wait until you reach your limit to seek God. Weariness is not a sign of failure, but an invitation from God to exchange the limited strength of our muscles for the limitless strength of His wings.
Your Next Step of Faith
Identify the moment of your day when you feel most tired and overwhelmed. Set a 2-minute alarm for that exact time. When it goes off, stop everything. Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and instead of asking for anything, just "wait" on the Lord. Surrender your weariness and declare in your heart, "Lord, I stop flapping my wings. Teach me to soar on Your currents of grace."
The Mirror of the Soul
What is your default response to weariness: more effort and more coffee, or more dependence and more prayer?
What does it practically mean to "wait on the Lord" in your current routine, which may seem to have no room for pauses?
Prayer
LORD, I confess that I often rely on my own strength until it is depleted. Forgive me for my self-sufficiency. I want to learn the blessing of waiting on You. Teach me the discipline to pause, to discern Your movement, and to trust in Your power to sustain me. Renew my strength, Father, so that I may soar high like an eagle, for Your glory. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Weariness is an invitation from God to exchange the strength of our muscles for the strength of His wings.
