FAITHFULNESS IN TEMPTATION

By: Pastor Flávio Macieira - 2025

Day 2 of "The Faithful Dreamer: Joseph's Journey and God's Purpose Behind the Scenes" series.

Imagine you are alone in a room, facing a test of integrity. No one is watching. There are no security cameras. An opportunity presents itself to cut a corner, to take a small advantage, to subtly break a rule for your own benefit. No one would ever know. It is in this moment, in the silent theater of our hearts, that our true character is revealed. We are not defined by our public actions, but by our secret choices, when the only witness is God.

After being sold and torn from his homeland, Joseph faces this exact test. On day one, we saw him at the bottom of a pit. But Joseph's story has a constant refrain that changes everything. Even as a slave in the house of Potiphar, a high-ranking Egyptian official, we read the most important sentence of his biography: "The Lord was with Joseph" (Genesis 39:2). Because of God's presence, Joseph succeeded. He earned his master's trust and became the manager of his entire household. The favor of God was on him. But favor often attracts the fire of testing.

...his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!”... And though she solicited him day after day, he refused to go to bed with her... [On the day she grabbed him, he said:] "How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?”... and he fled from the house. Genesis 39:7, 10, 9, 12 (NIV)

Joseph's temptation was persistent ("day after day") and private. By giving in, he might have gained even more favor and momentary pleasure, with little chance of being discovered. His refusal reveals the secret to his strength. His primary concern was not betraying Potiphar's trust; it was sinning "against God." Joseph's integrity was not based on the fear of human consequence, but on the reality of the divine presence. He lived aware of his audience of One.

And what was the reward for this extraordinary faithfulness? A promotion? Recognition? No. It was a false accusation and a prison sentence. Here lies one of the hardest and most important lessons of Joseph's journey: doing the right thing often costs us dearly in this world. Obedience does not always lead to immediate comfort. Sometimes, faithfulness leads us from one pit to another, even darker one. It is at this point that our faith is tested at its deepest level. Are we faithful to God for the blessings He gives, or are we faithful to Him simply because He is God?

Your Next Step of Faith: Identify a "secret" area of your life where your integrity is regularly tested (it could be in your use of time online, in small financial dealings, in the thoughts you entertain). Today, before you enter that situation, pray this short, powerful prayer: "Lord, I know You are with me in this place. Give me the strength to honor Your presence above my own desire."

The Soul Mirror:

  1. Who are you when no one is watching? Do your actions change when there's a human witness?

  2. Is your primary motivation for integrity the fear of getting caught or the desire to please God?

  3. How do you react when doing the right thing results in a negative consequence for you? Does it shake your faith?

Prayer: Lord, You are the God who sees in secret. I confess that my character often wavers when I think no one is looking. Forgive me for caring more about my reputation before men than my integrity before You. Like Joseph, I want to live aware of Your constant presence. Give me the strength to flee from temptation and to choose to honor You, even if it costs me dearly. May my secret life be an act of worship to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Character is not who you are in front of the crowd, but who you are when the only witness is God.
