ADJUSTING YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON PROBLEMS

By: Pastor Flávio Macieira - 2025

Day 6 of the "Focused Mind, Peaceful Heart" series.

For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 (NLT)

Do your problems seem enormous? Maybe your perspective is too close.

So far, we've learned to guard our minds, focus on what is good, renew our thoughts, practice silence, and cultivate gratitude. These are all vital tools. But there are times when pain, loss, or a crisis is so overwhelming that it seems to nullify all our efforts. In those moments, we need the most powerful tool of all to adjust our perspective: the focus on eternity.

Paul writes these words not from a place of comfort, but in the midst of persecution, pain, and extreme hardship. How could he call his troubles "small" and temporary? He wasn't downplaying the pain. He was comparing it to the "weight" of eternal glory that awaited him. He put his present suffering on a scale, and on the other side, he placed eternity with God. The glory weighed infinitely more.

This is the shift in perspective God invites us to have. Our problems are real, and they hurt. God doesn't ask us to pretend they don't exist. He invites us to look at them through a new lens. When we fix our eyes only on "what is seen"—the medical diagnosis, the bank account, the relationship conflict—the problem fills our entire field of vision and becomes a terrifying giant. But when we lift our eyes and "fix our gaze on what cannot be seen"—the promise of eternal life, the sovereignty of God, the glory that awaits us—the giant begins to shrink.

Eternity isn't an escape from reality; it is the ultimate reality that puts our present reality in its proper proportion. What is seen is temporary. This pain, this struggle, this hardship... it has an expiration date. But what is unseen—God's love, His presence, our heavenly home—is eternal. Focusing on eternity doesn't make the suffering disappear, but it gives it a purpose and an end. It becomes part of a process that is "producing for us a glory" that will last forever.

Your Next Step of Faith:

Think about the biggest problem or suffering weighing on your mind today. In your journal, on one page, write about this problem with all the details of how you see it now. On the next page, write a letter to yourself from the perspective of eternity. Imagine yourself one hundred years from now, in the presence of God, looking back at this exact problem. What would you say to your present-day self about the real importance and weight of this struggle in light of God's glory?

The Soul Mirror:

  1. How often are your thoughts focused on the "here and now" compared to the reality of eternity?

  2. In what way can the certainty of eternal life change how you react to a disappointment or failure today?

  3. "Fixing our gaze on what cannot be seen" is an act of faith. What truth about heaven or God's eternal character do you need to hold on to this week?

Let's adjust our vision in prayer.

Eternal Father, I confess that my eyes are almost always fixed on my problems, which is why they seem so large and overwhelming. Forgive me for my spiritual shortsightedness. Help me, by Your Spirit, to lift my eyes and fix them on the unseen, eternal reality. Remind me that my present troubles are small and temporary when compared to the glory You have prepared for me. Give me an eternal perspective so I can find hope in the midst of pain. In Jesus' name, Amen.

When eternity becomes your reference point, earthly problems lose their gravity.
